Action/Adventure

Author Title Rating Pairing Summary
Anna Mapping the Genome NC17 A/S Notes: Well, there’s a bit of m/m sex in it, here and there. Ask Starbuck, and he’ll tell you that there isn’t anywhere near enough. I explained to him that for the purposes of the dramatic narrative - I know: I flatter myself. But if I don’t, no one else will - then some scenes have to take place outside the bedroom. He’s not buying that one. Instead, he seems to be trapping Apollo in an awful lot of broom cupboards to make up for the lack. Apollo, btw, is not complaining. He's noticed, but he isn't complaining.
PAIRING : Apollo/Starbuck (established, but not yet public. Rock solid and loving and no, the angst does not come from any conflicts here)
TIMELINE:About 13-14 months after the Destruction of the Colonies
SYNOPSIS: Secrets and lies and chromosomes, and a lot of fun making up Aegyptan names.
DISCLAIMER: Universal owns ‘em.I’ve just borrowed them. I suppose that one day I’ll have to give them back. Not yet, though. I haven’t finished playing.
OTHER WARNINGS:
  • spelling and language is British English, but then, that’s what I am.
  • all non-canon characters are my own.
  • I’ve done my best on the genetics, but it’s been a long time since A-level biology. If I’ve boobed, let me off with a warning and a small fine.
  • the Greek hero "Aegyptus", from whom my Aegyptans at least derive their name, is pronounced with a hard "g", I think. He had 50 sons, btw, all but one murdered by their wives (fifty sisters and the boys’ cousins) in one very fell swoop on their joint wedding night. The one girl who decided to keep the boy was Hypermestra, who, to keep up the connexion, gives her name to a ship of the Fleet
  • we all know about the crappy BSG time units and that IFB is Intra-Fleet Broadcasting, now don't we?
  • Fleet, with a capital F refers to the military organisation, a combination of our navy and airforce, as opposed to the Infantry; fleet, no capital, is the refugee flotilla that the Galactica is leading.
  • and last, but not least, Heidi made me watch Sssss when we visited her in Toronto, and there was this amazing line that Dirk says that Starbuck loved so much that he just had to quote it. Whoever spots it gets the DB Appreciation of Great Dialogue Award "00". A purely honorary prize, but merited.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS : Val, for doing the counting of the parts. And my own Heidi, who's suffered through the long gestation of this almost as much as I have. Well, time for you to suffer now
Oh - and this one's MEGA long. Mega.

Anna Taking Shield: Starbuck - Taking Shield: Apollo NC-17 Apollo-Starbuck, Apollo-other, Starbuck -Bojay implied DISCLAIMER : I know I don’t own them, you know I don't own them, I know that you don’t own them either. Nobody's fooling anyone, then, and we can all be depressed together.

OTHER WARNINGS :
Usual stuff about British English and spelling
Clunky Galactican terminology: yahrens = year, sectar = month, secton = week, centar= hour, centon = minute, micron = second. But trying to work out the real equivalence is enough to drive you to drink! OK: canon is 100 centons to the centar, and 24 centars to the day (so please don't get thrown by someone saying "It's 2.75pm." After that, you're more or less on your own, but I'm working on the premise that there's 10 microns to the centon (stealing this unashamedly from Karen!), but what you decide the equivalence is to earth time is up to you. Just to help you along, if a micron = 5 earth seconds, then a standard colonial day is 33 hours long (Very long!); if it's 4 earth seconds, then the day is just over 26 earth hours long (reasonable); if it's 3 earth seconds then the colonial day is 20 hours (short). Me, I'm opting for 1 micron = 4 seconds. It doesn't make a happorth of difference to the story, but I'm more comfortable with it settled to my satisfaction.
And imperial measures (miles and feet) because I was born so long ago that I can remember the introduction of metric measures and imperial comes more naturally to me. I'm not comfortable with kilometres.
The Shield Regiment is entirely mine, and had its genesis about five years ago when I first started writing BSG, in some very, very AU stuff which thankfully does not survive. In this story, the Shield Regiment is the third arm of the services, the special forces.
The Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) was founded by Heidi, but I've borrowed it for this story. Here, it's not attached to the Academy, but used by the military to force (in the horticultural sense!) their strategic thinkers, and the graduates usually slide into staff jobs back at HQ - in the Strategy Unit - where things are quiet and they almost never get shot at. Do you know your Gilbert and Sullivan? "Stick to your desks and never go to sea, and you all may be Rulers of the Queen's Navee." [end cultural spot].
Heidi founded Cetes Starbase: that, too, gets a mention. A busy little bee, she is.
We know almost nothing about the back story of Apollo and Starbuck, so I'm not labelling this AU - it doesn't affect canon in any way (even Serina - read carefully!). Set about 3 years before Saga of a Star World. Assumption is that the Caprican age of consent is 18.

SYNOPSIS - When Harry met Sally - no, wait, that's been done. When Apollo met Starbuck. That's it.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS : To Syble, for insisting on knowing more about Joss and setting me off on this. To Karen, for her help with the knotty time problem. And to Heidi, as ever, for being the best beta in the known universe.

Taking Shield: Starbuck - Taking Shield: Apollo

Anna New! Taking Shield: Manual Dexterity NC17 A/S Rating Note: One scene may be considered a bit chanish, since I'm making the Caprican age of consent 18, and Apollo, for all his protestations that he's "nearly eighteen", is six months short of that when he and Joss do a bit more than make eyes at each other over a recumbent mummy. Ah - that's the wrapped in bandages variety, not someone's Mama.
DISCLAIMER : I acknowledge Universal's ownership without reservation. Trouble is that Universal just doesn't know how to treat 'em right, so I've granted them temporary refugee status.
OTHER WARNINGS : For this to make sense, you're better reading Taking Shield first (either the Apollo or the Starbuck version - or both, since they're quite different). Manual Dexterity is set around 10 sectars later, and gives some back history to why the skilful Shield Warrior is the same klutz who drops electronic devices all over Cylon base ships in Hand of God…
The story does jump around a bit - the narrative in the chapters isn’t always linear. Apart from Apollo's nightmare (held between *** to make it obvious that it was a nightmare, not just another sequencing jump), you won’t get any pointers to the un-linearity (is that even a word?). The story rather insisted on being written this way, and I think it becomes obvious as you read that you've jumped.
Usual stuff about British English and spelling.
Clunky Galactican terminology: yahrens = year, sectar = month, secton = week, centar= hour, centon = minute, micron = second. And imperial measures (miles and feet) because I was born so long ago that I can remember the introduction of metric measures and imperial comes more naturally to me. I'm not comfortable with kilometres. Mind you, it is easier to say a Cylon's two metres high than to say it's six foot six, so don't look to me for consistency.
The Shield Regiment is entirely mine, and had its genesis about five years ago when I first started writing BSG, in some very, very AU stuff which thankfully does not survive (Goodbye Mary Sue!). In this story, the Shield Regiment is the third arm of the services, the special forces.
There's a mention of Jacks - smugglers and pirates and people who generally have trouble obeying the law. Childhood memories are faulty things, but I think they were Andre Norton's invention, and I'm borrowing the concept with grateful thanks.
There's a reference to the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI), founded by Heidi. Here, it's not attached to the Academy, and the graduates usually slide into staff jobs back at HQ - in the Strategy Unit - where things are quiet and they almost never get shot at.
We know nothing about the back story of Apollo and Starbuck, so I'm letting the imagination loose - it doesn't alter canon, it just precedes it.
Set about 3 years before Saga of a Star World.
ORIGINAL CHARACTERS : Joss, Apollo's much older, very rich boyfriend; Rosie, (aka Shield Lieutenant Rosalyn), Apollo's lieutenant on the Shield Ship Hyperion; and Acer, a solium miner and ex-infantryman, who first appeared in Mapping - I liked him, and this is an alternate story for how he and Apollo met. Brief appearance by Infantry Lieutenant Grant, who's a regular inhabitant of my version of the BSG universe and a mention of Lt Chivers, the Hype's ensign.
SYNOPSIS - Apollo is MIA. Various people are sorry. Starbuck is very sorry.
THANKS to my Heidi for her patient beta-ing, and Syble for her continuing support and comments (and between you and me, I think she's a little in love with Joss) and to Goblin for lending me her rapscallion floozy - all I can say is that Apollo eventually makes good use of him.
Claire No Matter What PG A/S BTW, the title for this came from the Boyzone song of the same name. I'd finished the story and couldn't think of what to call it when I heard 'No Matter What' being sung. If you listen to the song, I think you'll agree that it fits.
Heidi M A Love Lost PG A/S This story should be read after I Love a Man in Uniform and Jealous (in that order) as these are three directly linked stories. I am a terrible titler, never know what to call anything, so please be patient with that. And, I'm changing my opinion of the BG terminology, will try and use it a bit more, as I see fit.
Heidi M Apollo's Rib, by Heidi M NC-17 A/S
Heidi M I Love A Man In Uniform PG A/S Author's Note/Disclaimer: I love Battlestar Galactica. I mean I really LOVE it, but, as much as I love it, there's things about it I never liked, and therefore won't use in my stories. Like, for instance, the time terminology: yahren, micron, centon, etc. Too clunky for me, but if you can't handle the Earth standard units, just say the BG terms to yourself when you come across 'em. Also, I use Earth-based gutter language -- you'll never hear anybody saying "frack!" in my stories! So please don't flame me for these (minor) alterations to the BG universe. Otherwise -- hope ya enjoy it!
Iris A Mother's Love PG A/S Warning: Extreme sappiness abounds.
Summary: When Starbuck tries to find a missing Apollo after a Cylon attack, he gets help from an unexpected source.
